AI search optimisation in Dubai means making your website the source that Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity quote when a UAE customer asks a question. It builds on normal SEO: indexed, snippet-eligible pages, question-led content with the answer first, and crawler access for AI search bots. Google says no special markup or AI file is required.
Key takeaways
- Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special markup or AI file: pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible.
- AI search competes passage against passage, so put a direct answer in the first sentence under each question-led heading.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt even if you block GPTBot, or ChatGPT search cannot cite you.
- Consistent business facts across your site, Google Business Profile and directories make you safer for AI to cite.
- AI traffic sits inside Search Console’s Web totals; track AI referrals in GA4 and run monthly test prompts.
What AI search optimisation is (and what it is not)
AI search optimisation is the work of getting your pages selected as supporting sources inside AI-generated answers, rather than only ranking as a blue link. You will also see it called answer engine optimisation (AEO) or generative engine optimisation (GEO); the labels differ, the goal is the same.
It is not a separate technical discipline with its own secret files. Google’s own documentation, AI features and your website, states there are no additional requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode, that a page simply needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and that no special schema.org structured data is needed. Any agency selling you a proprietary “AI indexing” file is selling something Google says it does not read.
What does change is the unit of competition: classic SEO competes page against page for a ranking, while AI search competes passage against passage for a citation.
Why Dubai businesses should act on this now
AI answers are already live for UAE searchers in both of the languages your customers use. Google rolled AI Mode out to 180 countries and territories in August 2025, initially in English, and then added Modern Standard Arabic and 35 other languages in October 2025. For a clinic in Jumeirah, a restaurant in Business Bay or a brokerage in Dubai Marina, that means English- and Arabic-speaking customers alike can receive a synthesised answer, with a handful of cited sources, before they ever see your listing.
The second reason is that AI citations no longer track rankings as closely as they did. Ahrefs’ March 2026 study of around 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs found that roughly 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the top 10 results for the same query, with about 31% coming from positions 11 to 100 and a further 31% from pages outside the top 100 entirely. Ahrefs’ July 2025 snapshot had put the top-10 share at 76%, although the company notes its parsing method improved between the two studies, so the figures are not a perfect like-for-like comparison.
Read that two ways: a well-structured page from a smaller Dubai business can be cited without ranking first, and a long-standing number-one page can be skipped if it does not answer the question cleanly.
How AI engines decide which Dubai businesses to cite
AI search tools break a question into several background searches, pull candidate pages for each, and then choose the passages that best support the final answer. Google describes this process as “query fan-out”, and it explains why a single question such as “best dental implant clinic in Dubai for a nervous patient” can draw on pages about sedation options, pricing in AED, DHA-licensed clinics and patient reviews at the same time.
Three things follow. A page that covers one sub-question thoroughly often beats a page that mentions ten briefly. Facts that can be confirmed elsewhere (your Google Business Profile, licence listing or LinkedIn page) are safer for a model to repeat than facts that exist only on your site. And the first sentence under each heading is the one most likely to be lifted. Google also reports that clicks arriving from AI Overviews tend to be “higher quality”, with visitors spending more time on the site.
A seven-step AI search checklist for a UAE business
Most of this checklist can be done in-house, and it doubles as a brief for any agency you work with.
- Confirm every money page is indexed and snippet-eligible. Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console. A page blocked by robots.txt, tagged noindex or set to nosnippet cannot be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Audit robots.txt for AI search crawlers. OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that surfaces websites in ChatGPT search, and that it is controlled independently of GPTBot, the training crawler. A site that blocked “all AI bots” is invisible in ChatGPT answers without realising it; allow OAI-SearchBot even if you keep GPTBot blocked.
- Rewrite key pages so each heading is a question and the first sentence is the answer. “How much does Invisalign cost in Dubai?” followed by a direct range in AED (with a date) is citable. “Our smile journey” is not.
- Add Dubai-specific detail a model can verify. Named areas you serve, opening hours, parking, languages spoken, accepted insurers, DHA or DED licence numbers where appropriate. Specifics separate your page from a generic competitor’s.
- Keep structured data honest. Google asks that structured data match the visible text. Use FAQ, LocalBusiness and Service markup where it describes what is actually on the page, and nowhere else.
- Make your facts consistent everywhere. Name, address, phone number, prices and claims should read the same on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Zomato, Bayut or Property Finder, and any directory. For clinics, our Google Business Profile checklist for Dubai dental clinics and guide to local SEO in Dubai cover this step in detail.
- Measure sensibly. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the Search Console Performance report under the “Web” search type, not broken out separately. Track branded search growth, direct and referral visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in GA4, and run a fixed set of test prompts monthly to see whether you appear.
Traditional SEO versus AI search optimisation: what changes
The foundations are shared, which is why a Dubai business with solid SEO is already halfway there; the differences sit in content shape and measurement. If you are still deciding where to invest, see SEO vs Google Ads in Dubai.
| Area | Traditional SEO | AI search optimisation |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank the page for a keyword | Be cited as a source in the answer |
| Unit of competition | The page | The passage or paragraph |
| Content shape | Keyword-themed articles and service pages | Question-led sections with the answer in the first sentence |
| Technical requirements | Crawlable, indexable, fast | The same, plus access for AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot |
| Local signals | Google Business Profile, citations, reviews | The same, with greater weight on consistency across sources |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, impressions | Blended Search Console traffic, AI referrals, prompt testing, branded demand |
Frequently asked questions
No. Google’s documentation says no special schema.org structured data, AI text file or new markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Structured data still helps when it accurately describes the visible content, but it is not an entry ticket.
Not by itself. OpenAI uses GPTBot for model training and OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search, and the two are controlled separately in robots.txt. You can disallow GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot so your pages remain eligible to be cited and linked in ChatGPT’s search results.
No. Google includes visits from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the overall Web search traffic in the Performance report, with no separate filter. To gauge AI visibility, combine Search Console trends with GA4 referrals from AI assistants, branded search growth and a monthly set of test prompts.
No. It extends it. AI engines still draw heavily on indexed, well-ranked pages, and Ahrefs’ 2026 data shows roughly 38% of AI Overview citations come from top-10 results. The practical approach is to keep your SEO foundations and reshape key pages into question-led, specific, verifiable content that both Google and AI assistants can cite.
