The short answer
To win more diners from Google Maps, a Dubai restaurant needs a verified Google Business Profile with its real name, the most specific cuisine category, accurate dine-in and special hours, a current menu, real food and venue photos, a steady flow of genuine reviews with replies, regular posts, and direct links to book or order. Then track calls, directions and bookings every month.
Most diners in Dubai decide where to eat on their phone. They search “brunch near me”, “best shawarma Deira” or “rooftop dinner Downtown”, glance at the map, compare ratings and photos, and tap to call, book or get directions. Your Google Business Profile is what they see in that moment, often before your website or Instagram.
The profile is free, but many restaurants leave it half-finished. This checklist covers the ten things that make the biggest difference, based on Google’s own guidelines and what we see working for Dubai venues.
Key takeaways
- Use your real-world name only. Adding keywords such as cuisine or area to the name breaks Google’s rules and risks suspension.
- Choose the most specific primary category, such as a cuisine type, and as few extra categories as you need.
- Show dine-in hours and set special hours for Ramadan, Eid and public holidays.
- Photos, menu and reviews do most of the selling: keep them current.
- Add direct booking and ordering links, and track them with UTM tags.
1. How do you claim and verify the right listing?
Search your restaurant on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, claim it rather than creating a new one, so you keep its reviews. Each physical branch needs its own profile. Delivery-only or cloud kitchens should check Google’s rules carefully, because a location customers cannot visit is treated differently from a dine-in restaurant.
2. What name should you use?
Your name exactly as it appears on your signage and website. Google’s guidelines do not allow extra descriptive text such as taglines, locations or services in the name. “Spice Route” is fine; “Spice Route Best Indian Restaurant Dubai Marina” is not, and it can lead to the listing being suspended.
3. Which category should a restaurant choose?
Pick the most specific primary category that describes what you are, such as Lebanese restaurant, Sushi restaurant or Café, rather than just “Restaurant”. Google advises using as few categories as possible, and only for what your business is, not every dish or amenity you offer. Your primary category has a large effect on which searches you appear in.
4. How should you set your opening hours?
Use the hours when diners can actually come in. If you also do delivery or takeaway with different hours, add them as extra hour types. Set special hours ahead of Ramadan, Eid, National Day and other public holidays. Wrong hours are one of the quickest ways to earn a one-star review.
5. Should you add your menu to Google?
Yes. Add your menu with dish names, short descriptions and prices, or link to a menu page on your website. Diners compare menus on the map before choosing. Keep prices current, and update the menu when you launch seasonal or Ramadan iftar menus.
6. Which attributes matter for Dubai diners?
Attributes are the small details people filter by: outdoor seating, family-friendly, wheelchair accessible, parking, reservations, delivery, Wi-Fi, vegetarian options. Fill in every attribute that genuinely applies. They help you show up for searches like “outdoor seating restaurant JBR”.
7. What photos should a restaurant upload?
Real, well-lit photos of your signature dishes, the dining room, the terrace or view, the bar if you have one, and the entrance so guests can find you. Add new photos regularly, especially when the menu changes. Customer photos appear too, so make the venue easy to photograph well.
8. How do you get more Google reviews?
Ask. A QR code on the bill folder or table card that opens your review link, plus a short WhatsApp message after a booking, works well. Never offer discounts, free desserts or gifts in exchange for reviews, and never write reviews for your own business. Reply to every review, thank happy guests by name, and answer complaints calmly with a way to follow up offline.
9. What should you post on your profile?
Use posts for new dishes, weekly specials, brunch and live music nights, iftar and suhoor menus, and events. If a post promotes an offer or a giveaway, Google requires clear terms, and any offer you promise must be honoured. Posting regularly also shows Google and diners that the restaurant is active.
10. How do you turn views into bookings and orders?
Add direct links for reservations and ordering. Where possible, link to your own booking or ordering page so you keep the customer relationship and avoid paying commission on every order. Tag your website link with UTM parameters and check the profile’s performance report monthly: calls, direction requests, website clicks and bookings. If your website is slow on mobile, fix it first; see website design for Dubai businesses.
How your profile fits your wider restaurant marketing
A strong Google profile is the cheapest way to win local diners, but it works best with good Instagram content, a fast website with a clear menu and booking button, and targeted ads for launches and events. Consistent details across your profile, website and delivery apps also help AI assistants like ChatGPT recommend you accurately; see our guide to AI search optimisation.
